In a couple weeks I'll be turning 30, and I'm planning on using this as a superb excuse to hang with my friends, dance and have (just) one too many drinks. I'm throwing myself a treintañera!
What is a treintañera?
Since a treintañera is a new thing (I'm pretty sure our friend, Fife, invented it), maybe it bears some defining. First of all, a treintañera is a play on the much more important and more popularly practiced celebration called a quinceañera. A quinceañera honors a fifteen-year-old latina as she comes of age, and is an opportunity for her to express her individuality and fabulousness to her community. They look like a lot of crinoline and fun and they are steeped in glamour and tradition. They also tend to feature lots of guests, food, music and dancing.
Around here folks take a real long time to grow up. I feel simultaneously old and young enough that an ironic coming-of-age celebration seems strangely appropriate. But for me, really, a treintañera is a great excuse for us get gussied up in poofy dresses and bow ties. As Fife likes to say, "Treintanera: twice the age, twice the party, twice the fun."
By the way, treintañeras don't usually have anything to do with bikes, but mine happens to be bike themed, in large part because of where we're gettin' down.

You're invited!
The event will be held at Velo Cult, a bike shop, bar and event space, on Saturday, November 17th from 8pm to 2am. It will be much like going to a bar for birthday drinks, but with a DJ, dance floor and photo booth, and without randos at the bar. Come help me celebrate! Bring a friend!
Ironic or earnestly formal attire is requested (best walk the line, eh?). Bikes not required.
